The Diocese of Lodwar- Child Protection Department has been the pioneer in developing a policy to protect children’s rights and among the first of the Catholic Dioceses in Kenya to Develop a Diocesan Child Protection Policy, and implement a Child Protection Policy through the creation of Diocesan Child Protection Offices in Kenyan Diocese of Lodwar

The overall objection of the program Is to work towards achieving the rights of all children with emphasis on the marginalized and deprived children in Turkana County.

The department is committed to increasing children’s protection against violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect and to supporting children and their families’ recovery from these violations. Our focus on helping the most vulnerable and marginalized children in Turkana County is through increasing safety for children by building the capacity of community based structures such as Child Protection Committees so as to identify, assess and report on and respond to the children’s cases. All the staff working for these children sign an oath to protect these children and serve them without discrimination and they report any cases of child abuse to the relevant authorities.

• 83 children subject to Commercial Sexual Exploitation were rescued from the street of Lodwar, Lokichar and Kalokol. Successful rehabilitation carried out for a period of three months.

• Those 83 children were enrolled in schools (5 in secondary schools, 5 in vocational training and 73 in primary institutions).

• 40 families traced and successful reintegration of the children achieved.
